The Grey Line was composed between January and June 2025 as part of a collaborative project with 2023-2025 RNCM Innovate Fellow Jasdeep Singh Degun.
The grey line is the band around the Earth that transitions from day to night. It is a moment of transition with many cultural, natural and technical associations – twilight is associated with peace, melancholy, the passage of time and the beauty of the sky; many migratory species of birds use it to navigate; it is the perfect time of astronomical observations and it makes radio propagation (particularly along the grey line) very efficient for long-distance communication. The piece has five sections – Day, Golden Hour, Deep Sky Observations, Blue Hour and Dew Point – each focussing on a different mood and activity - and five accompanying abstract paintings.
